Abstract-The effect of halothane and enflurane on hepatic tissue in 50 Sprague-Dawley rats in the presence of acute mild hypoxic condition were studied. Sprague-Dawley rats were randomly allocated to one of four treatment group : control
group-breathing
room air (n=10), hypoxic group-expose to hypoxia(14% oxygen inspired with nitrogen balance) for 1 hour(n=17), halothane group-exposed to hypoxia for 1 hour and 1% halothane with 40% oxygen for 1 hour(n=13), enflurane group-exposed to hypoxia for
1
hour
and 2.2% enflurane with 40% oxygen for 1 hour(n=10). Animals from all groups were killed at 24 hours after time of completion of anesthesia. Liver tissue was coded and subsequently examined by light microscopy.
There were no animals with centrilobular necrosis.
There were significant changes in the liver in hypoxic, halothane and enflurane group compared to control group as evidenced by histologic score. But there were no differences between hypoxic, halothane and enflurane group.
In conclusion, hypoxia can induce abnormalities of hepatic tissue and that the abnormalities was not significantly aggravated by inhalation of halothane and enflurane in 40% oxygen for 1 hour.
